About the aircraft

D-EMHL is a Rockwell Commander 114 built in 1977 with airframe number 78413386 and engine number 14151. This aircraft has been registered in Germany since new and has always been hangared. The aircraft went through a major renovation in 2023, now featuring a complete glass cockpit and new seats.

The Commander 114 represents one of general aviation’s most distinctive designs from the 1970s. What sets the 114 apart is its exceptionally spacious cabin, measuring 47 inches wide and 49 inches high – the most spacious cabin of any aircraft design of its era. The aircraft features the uncommon luxury of full-sized doors on both sides.

The Commander’s distinctive appearance is immediately recognizable by its wings with unusually large dihedral, positioning the wing tips much higher than the wing roots. The aircraft incorporates trailing-link main landing gear for softer landings, making it particularly forgiving. The cruciform tail is positioned high enough to be out of the propwash, giving the Commander some handling characteristics similar to jets.

The 114 is capable of cruising speeds up to 165 knots at 75% power and flies for up to five hours and above in some circumstances without refueling, making it an excellent travel machine. With some care it can also be landed on grass.

The avionics in D-EMHL – with a Garmin GTN 750Xi and G500 TXi as the centerpieces – makes it compatible with all European approaches, down to RNAV 1. When you climb inside and pull the doors shut, you experience a luxury car-like feel rather than the typical light airplane experience, with excellent headroom and unsurpassed views through expansive windows.
